The abbreviation W121BII identifies the 190SL model, a medium-high range roadster produced from 1955 to 1963 by Mercedes-Benz in about 25.000 units. It was first shown as a prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show, and was available with an optional removable hardtop. The 1.9-liter in-line four-cylinder engine with single overhead camshaft, called the M121, delivered up to 105 HP of maximum power. It was derived from the 3-liter used for the 300SL, of which it retains some characteristics. It did not have a very high power, because the engine-gearbox unit, fixed on an auxiliary frame, was anchored on three points cushioned by large rubber pads. In this way, an independent system was obtained that was acoustically isolated from the body.
