Contrary to its image as a popular car maker, FIAT almost always had sporty or sporty-looking models in its lineup. Towards the end of the 1950s, however, they were not very competitive with sports cars such as the Alfa Romeos, and so Fiat decided to create a spider with a more elegant and European taste. The new spider, with bodywork designed by Pininfarina, presented at the 1959 Geneva Motor Show, was called the “1200 Cabriolet” but it was a real two-seater spider. It was so commercially successful that it immediately became the most popular convertible in Italy, recording sales of over 15,000 units from March 1959 to March 1963.
