Contrary to its image as a producer of popular cars, FIAT has almost always had sporty or sporty-looking models in its lineup. However, towards the end of the 1950s, they were not very competitive compared to sports cars like Alfa Romeos, so Fiat decided to create a spider with a more elegant and European taste. The new spider, with a body designed by Pininfarina, was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1959 and was named “1200 Cabriolet,” but it was a true two-seater spider. It was such a commercial success that it immediately became the most popular Cabriolet in Italy, recording sales of over 15,000 units from March 1959 to March 1963.
